Herb Claus, 92 of Paso Robles, passed away on January 30, 2010 in Templeton, CA. Herb was born in Paso Robles to Matt and Louise Claus on April 8, 1917, delivered by Doc Sobey in a little house on Oak Street, 2 blocks from where he later built his own home. He attended Paso Schools, loved to work on cars and often watched the Pittsburg Pirates practice here in the summer. Herb was drafted into the US Army in 1941 and faithfully served his country for 4 years. After he returned home he never missed a Veteran’s Day or Memorial Day service for the rest of his life.
Herb worked in the US Post Office for 45 years and retired as the Assistant Postmaster. During those years he met Teddy Dickinson, a girl who also had her roots in Paso. They married and raised 4 children.
Trinity Lutheran Church was his church for 92 years. He served on many boards, was always available for handyman work and sang in the choir for 70…..yes, that’s 70…years! During his spare time his favorite thing to do was work in his shop doing all sorts of projects, but mostly working with wood. Herb was a quality craftsman, a talent he inherited from his grandfather, Pastor Carl Claus, the first Lutheran minister in Geneseo. He gave generously of his time and talents to anyone, anywhere, anytime.
Herb leaves a big hole in the lives of all who loved him but he left behind a legacy of consistency, stability, integrity and honor for the future generations.
